Virtual Reality Company NextVR has been acquired by Apple

Apple has purchased NextVR, a company that is specialized in virtual reality streaming live events.

NextVR has partnered with the biggest leagues and broadcasters to deliver exclusive VR events such as NBA games, ICC soccer matches, the Kentucky Derby, the US Open, the Daytona 500 and concerts from the band Coldplay. Through the NextVR app you can be courtside, behind the goal or center stage. Experience your favorite events live or browse highlights from previous events at NextVR.com.

Bloomberg reports that the acquisition will help Apple develop VR and AR headsets and apps and content accompanying them.

The NextVR website was shut down except for a note that “NextVR moves in a new direction.”

Apple has focused over the past few years on several digital, virtual, and mixed reality devices. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said just today that Apple’s augmented reality could launch intelligent glasses in 2022.

Along with the smart glasses, rumors also indicated that Apple works on some sort of virtual reality headset that has an 8 K display for each eye and is unheard of from a smartphone or computer.
